Scientific Process: Helping Children Get Started

According to the Connecticut State Standards, our children need to understand the process and identify the components of a scientific experiment by the beginning of March. This could be as simple as reading an experiment and identifying the independent variable. Sadly, many children get confused between the "results" and the variable. Yes, a marble will travel farther based on the height of a marble ramp, however the distance traveled would be the results while the different heights would represent the variable of the experiment.

Being able to correctly read a chart with data and determine the importance of the information provided in order to draw a conclusion is another area being assessed. In order to provide assistance to youngsters, have them read the weather page of the newspaper regularly. Allow them the opportunity to look at the different temperatures across the United States and even in different countries in order to compare information. Spending time discussing this information reinforces the importance of education in your child's life.

Science is everywhere and one of the easiest things to incorporate into your daily discussions with your children.
